United Airlines becomes first airline to add non-binary gender booking options

United Airlines announced Fri that it has get the first US carrier to offer non-binary gender options when booking flights — allowing customers to select the title "Mx."

Customers now accept the ability to identify themselves as M (male), F (female person), U (undisclosed) or 10 (unspecified), corresponding with what is marked on their passports or identification.

Beck Bailey, interim managing director of the Workplace Equality Program at the Human Rights Campaign, said: "Past providing not-binary gender selection for ticketing and the gender-inclusive honorific 'Mx' in user profiles, United Airlines is taking an important stride frontwards for non-binary inclusion."

United's move comes later 2 trade groups — Airlines for America in the US and the global International Air Transport Association — recently approved a new international all-time-practices standard that suggests adaptation for customers using "not-binary IDs."

The suggested standard would create a booking option for "unspecified" or "undisclosed" genders. That option would be in add-on to the options for "male" or "female."

The standard was expected to become constructive June one, but information technology was up to individual airlines to make the option available to their booking platforms, according to USA Today.

The five largest U.s. carriers — American, Delta, United, Southwest and Alaska airlines — all previously told the news outlet that they plan to implement the trade groups' suggestion.
